Stupid with Zeros

Rachel and I are having a small revival going on in our house. Back in the day when we were young and stupid, we did some stupid stuff with a few zeros on the end of it. You know what I am talking about. You just need that TV.  “I can pay that off pretty fast.” “I’ll put extra money on it every month so I can get it now.” “I just need that car that, as you drive, it talks to you, turns on the headlights automatically and has an easy-bake-oven in the glove compartment.” And when the clerk rings up the product it has already depreciated 25%.

I know that you are out there because most of us spent 10% more last year than what we actually made. That’s bad. Then you here us crazy ministers tell you that you should give away the first 10%. “Do you actually think money grows on trees?” Well, they are a paper product.

But many people are wanting to give more or start giving to God, but they think that they can’t because of all the bills. So my goal is to help people see the freedom there is when you are debt free. Proverbs 22:7 says that “a borrower is slave to the lender.” And God does not want you to be a slave to no man.

Getting out of debt might be easier than you think. I can go indepth if you want me to, but here are the baby steps.

  1. Write down how you are going to spend your money. The check register is where you right down where you have SPENT your money. But you need to set down once a month and write down where you are going to SPEND your money. This is called a budget. Without it, you will always remain broke.
  2. Save up $1000 emergency fund. Start that now. We do not live in a perfect world. Your car will break down, your dryer will go out. You need a little bit of cash to cover emergencies. If you don’t, then you will have to more into debt to cover emergencies.
  3. Debt Snowball. List your debts from smallest to largest. Pay only the minimum payment on all your debts except the smallest debt. After you have paid off the smallest debt, then add what you were paying to the next smallest debt. And so on.

I want you guys to become free. Rachel and I are getting there. If you have any questions, please let me know. I would love to help answer any questions.
