Sunday Morning Problems - Oct 28
Oct 29th, 2007 by Brian
Okay, I will discuss them more in detail at practice but let’s not walk away without a ton of notes.
1. Alive, Forever, Amen - Kelly (who used my mic) was loud through the monitors. The praise team got off (or the choir got off, depending who you ask) and the instruments went with the person loudest through the monitor. This is not Kelly’s nor Joe’s fault. Let’s see how we can fix this. Even though this is a regular song for us (4th time we have done the song) would better markings on the playlist, like who has what mic, been the answer? Would having Kelly to stay for practice been the answer?
2. The Piano lost it’s sound going to the board. When the piano loses it’s sound, there are hundreds of reasons why. But we do know that the sound was not going to the sound board. I don’t care if we have to replace every wire, let’s fix it. But the problem doesn’t end there. The wires are easily being trampled on because of it’s location. We need to continue to rearrange the stage until we find what is best for the musicians, sound, and everything else. Maybe a little better passageway to the instruments as well.
3. After those problems, everything else was due to the fact that the band is not writing notes in their music. Bass and drums gave us an incredible intro into the wrong song. We need to write all of our notes in our music. I’m not passing the buck off to the musicians. After the “God is Good all the Time” everyone, including myself was gun shy.
Here are three things that must be done to keep us being complacent and prepared:
1. Writing down all notes into our music. And making sure everyone is correctly writing down the notes.
2. Having well communicating practices. Making sure everyone is on the same page.
3. Glenn’s class lets out at 10:25. Everyone needs to be at their spot at 10:26 to run over and talk through some major issues. This is the issue that always seems to be more lax. We do a couple of times, then it’s 10:30, then 10:40.
The good things about Sunday:
1. If that’s the worse we have done is several months, then we are doing good. After we restarted “God is Good” everyone responded real well to the service. I still had a ton of compliments. I received more compliments this Sunday then what I did for “Praise You”.
2. Holy Spirit Rain Down. We left a little room for the Holy Spirit. Great Job following me!
3. It is now in our system, that no matter what happens on stage, we will worship!

#1 - Anyone who is singing a lead voice NEEDS to be there for practice - otherwise you might sing it different than that person and come Sunday we are all over the place. Her mic was WAY too loud in the monitor - she drowned the other 3 praise team members - is it possible (next time) to turn her down? I just talked to Joe Rush and he said that’s cool - BUT- how else is he suppose to know it needs to be turned down if we don’t tell him? (This comes from the extra time before church practicing!!
#2 - I have an idea for laying on the instruments in a U shape. With Brian’s back facing the congregation, you would have your instruments in front and your choir up & behind. I think we need to utilize the extra space on the right hand side of the stage - BAD - it would solve your cords being drug across the stage.
#3 - I wish we had a way to silently communicate back and forth with Joe - like walkie talkies with an earbud so you don’t hear the (beep beep) sound. That would solve a lot of problems.
#4 - On the order of music - it was written that we would do Alive…first, then the Welcome, then there would be a special, then God is Good. Well I noticed that after the Welcome prayer the musicians were just sitting there b/c they were expecting a special and then came the long silence followed by the wonderful intro into the wrong song. If something happens to change the order of service, make sure we let everyone know to avoid the akward silence.
Just a ton of bad communication. The band seems to like the playlist that we create through google, than the shorter version that I use to put out. Let’s start there. I need to double check everything that is going on and make sure that everyone else knows what is going on.
Second, let’s take a little more time during practice to talk through, word for word everything and have everyone visualize what is going on.
Third, we have some two-way radios that have a head piece. These use to be used by the drummer and the sound guy to communicate. They are sound activated so there is no button to push. Those that are using them will have to get use to them. These radios can use the batteries that we are throwing away. We need to get those cables moved from the front of the stage to the back of the stage before Christmas.
